Jean-Louis Maxan

(1966 - )

Maxan was born in Jeremie, Haiti. He moved to Port au Prince where he was encouraged by his cousins to begin painting in 1992. He is a self-taught artist, and voodoo is his source of inspiration. Maxan has two styles of painting, one political (darker in mood and color, with overt political themes) and one of theSaint Soleil School (characterized by vibrant, fantastical forms, based on dreams and visions).

"Maxan is a dynamo, a sprightly spirit in a slim package. When you’re with him, he’s always in motion, with the ever-present pencil, as if he was about to put it to paper and draw. At his home, in Port-au-Prince, in a gallery, he is the first one to say “Yes, I can do that”…he is a kind soul whose creations are birthed by immense talent and determination under staggering odds. He is a joy to be with, and a pleasure to know." G.P.
