Jorelus Joseph

(1939 - 2009)

Jorelus was born in 1939 in Leogane. He originally studied to be a pastry chef/baker, but also worked in Port au Prince at the Centre d’Art, where his interest in painting developed. He painted his first piece at age 43. He is a rare true self-taught, or outsider, artist.

"When you look at his work, there is a strong resemblance to Aboriginal paintings in the bold patterning and strong use of dots/symbols, which can identify/reflect the region where the artist is from. Jorelus added his own vibrant coloration to his work, and especially loved to paint birds as a subject in all their activities." G.P.
