I went to see the pile lighthouse exhibit in St. Michaels shortly after I moved here and was struck by the sense of deep isolation that the keepers must have felt. I also was intrigued by the evidence of various creative practices to take up time and improve their mental health. I used my favorite relief textile techniques to create the lighthouse itself and then added in found objects and other pieces that I had stashed around my studio. It felt like a way to honor the way the keepers might have crafted in their spare time.
