I’ve now lived in two different areas of the country where land is disappearing due to water, so I was completely drawn in when I first encountered a photo of the last house on Holland Island sinking. Holland Island had 70 house and 360 residents on it in 1910 and was showing serious signs of erosion by 1914. It was essentially abandoned by 1918. I wanted to capture that sense of how this Victorian house had become part of the local environment by 2010. I think the idea of this house returning to nature as a host for birds and sea life is important, sad, and beautiful.
